Sophia 's Story

What's your preferred name?

Sophia

What are your pronouns?

She/Her

Share with us how you identify and how you came to that understanding of yourself.

I identify as a trans woman. I came to that understanding from watching women who felt like me on the 90s talk shows. You know the "Is it a man or is it a woman" shows. Now, those kinds of shows are a big no-no. But for me, as a young child, it was all I had. I thought the woman were beautiful and smart. I thought, "they are who I want to be when I grow up".  I started to think that that could be me too.

Tell us about how your self-expression has helped you grow.

My self-expression has helped me grow to be a more confident woman.  I'm helping my community by raising thousands of dollars over the years for different LGBTQ+ charities.  Today, I am confident enough to get on stage in front of hundreds of people and perform.

Where did you grow up? What was a formative experience you had in childhood that led you to where you are today?

I grew up on a rabbit farm in Springdale, Arkansas (no joke). I was very blessed to have a loving and understanding family that allowed me to express myself through music, dance, and theater. My family supported me from day one by calling me by my preferred name and gender. I am included in all family gatherings and chats.

What is a life goal that you are working on or have achieved? How has working toward this goal helped you understand yourself as an individual?

Currently, I am working on my physical self. Taking better care of my body and forming it into the way I would like it to be. Another goal is to continue growing my home business, Sophia's Sweets (shameless plug).  I'm achieving these goals by working diligently and continually learning and growing. I have practiced my baking skills on friends and family, and worked with my PCP (primary care provider) for referrals for gender care.

Who is someone who inspired you to be your true self? What was their influence on you?

I aspire to be more like my Mother. She is such a strong, capable, and compassionate person. We both have a dry sense of humor and great hair! She is constantly giving and sacrificing, not only for her family but also for her church community.  We share that trait.

What's something that you worry about?

The current political state. I want to see a live-and-let-live America. I follow the golden rule, "do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

What gives you hope?

My spouse. We met during COVID on a dating site. He lived in Washington, and I was in Arizona.  Neither of us wanted a long-distance relationship, but I messaged him, and it went from there. He supports all of my crazy performance ideas and is my strength when I am weak.

If you had a message for your younger self, what would you say?

You are enough. My younger self would appreciate this. I never felt good enough.

What's a piece of wisdom you've learned that has helped you?

Don't sweat the small stuff. We only get one go around on this earth so make it the best possible. The small stuff can be anything from a flat tire to your spouse or roommate leaving a sink of dirty dishes to stubbing your toe. Are these things irritating? Of course,  but they're temporary.

What is something you wish other people would know or understand?

Trans people are so much more than their gender identity. We have thoughts and feelings. Please don't boil us down to what's between my thighs cause honestly that's none of your damn business. People should be more interested in their hearts. Yea, I'm trans, but I'm also a good person.
